Lake Bistineau State Park

Memorial Day Weekend

Camper spaces all full;

temp 93; humidity 85.

We hook up utilities,

hang a hammock,

turn on the AC.

I choose to sweat

outside in the shade

within earshot

of kids playing catch;

Randy Travis whining.

You nap in the RV.

Remind me again: How

is this better than

a weekend at home?

Becky HaiglerThank you Becky Haigler for creating our first written Picture of the Day. We're always looking for art that is about SB Land. Submit yours and help us record the mythology of Northwest Louisiana.

Hear, Speak No Evil
Originally uploaded by Schleuss.

Picture of the Day comes from Jon Schleuss -- a multi talented Centenary student whose fervor about communication is revolutionizing the college's radio station, KSCL.

Think you're too old and out of touch to like what those crazy college kids are doing on the airwaves? We know a 58 year-old white Republican man who is passionate about what he hears on 91.3 FM. Tune in but be prepared. It's not slick. It's earthy. And that's good because slick equals corporate radio and how boring has that become?

Mikerosebery's cool shot of the Shreveport Convention Center is our Picture of the Day. A fine example of all kinds of nifty stuff to sketch or take pictures of in downtown Shreveport. Bike, walk or bus on down there this afternoon and get your creative on!

If you've not seen Darrell Rebouche's blog you'll find it here. It's one of our daily reads around the RRBJ office. We love how he documents family life in SB Land.

That's the Red River in the pic. Which makes RRBJ think of the Red River District under the Texas Street Bridge. Here's what we'd like to see under there:
Cosplay
Bike Rentals
Skateboards
More Skateboards
Active Transportation
Maybe a little of what Memphis is doing

Smart City Radio had a recent program on riverfronts.

Thank you to Liz Jackson at takeaholladay for the use of her nifty cool drawing of the steeple of the First United Methodist Church at the head of Texas Street. She calls the piece Jesus Loves.

Note: we have always loved the steeple Ghost Walking Tour Shreveport Spirit Tours Rack Card and even used it on the front of our rack cards for our downtown walking tours.

The mind set of summer wraps with this Labor Day weekend. Did you accomplish everything on your hot weather list? Not to worry. It really doesn't cool off until November in SB Land and RRBJ has even been Christmas shopping in shorts in December. Viva la South!

Thank you to trudeau for the use of quenching the dog days in shreveport! Have you read Robert Trudeau's Shreveport blog? Imagine the lovely world we'd live in if the mainstream media covered SB Land culture the way this man does.

Alix B. took this picture while traveling through Shreveport. It even ended up on her blog. She's on a 9,000 mile trip, via scooter, for Peace. Learn more at Peacescooter.com.

Thank you to fluidattitude for letting us use the photo Love Will Save Us.

In a funny little twist the art becomes art. The photo is a picture of a piece of public art by Shreveport artist Noma Fowler-Sandlin who many folks know as jam queen and owner of Pan's Pantry.

Noma sends this word out: The Shreveport Farmers' Market is closing until October 13, so be sure and come do your shopping and see me, of course, on Saturday, 25 August, from 7 to 11:30. It's at Festival Plaza in downtown Shreveport, where Commerce intersects Crockett. I'll miss it. Boo hoo. But since I'm getting ready for the Red River Revel, I'll need that day to cook jam. Love and thanks to all my customers, patrons and pals, Noma.

Buying and eating Pan's Pantry jams is just good karma and a way to Keep Shreveport Wild.

Think life in Big D must be more exciting than life in SB Land? Not hardly when you realize most Texans come to SB Land to play.

Plenty happening here this weekend and leave it to Trudeau to know all about it... Buddy Flett's part of the Thursday Night Trolley Tours.

On Friday there's three meaty choices... a new movie by local movie makers debuts at LSUS Theater... Author-artist Neil Johnson gives insight on his work at the Bossier Arts Council... and the current hot venue Big D's BBQ at the corner of Caddo and Common Streets will have live music by a band that was a part of the hotness that is SXSW.

About all the action being in SB Land -- Darrell Rebouche tells that story in the comments section of this post at his Daddy D's Story Time blog.

Thank you to Mike Henley at slivermeteors for the use of his Shreveport shot.

The best housing bargains in SB Land are still found in the historic Highland neighborhood. Here's a sweet deal on a 4 bedroom 2.5 bath place for $139,000. For only $54,499 you can get a 2 bedroom 1 bath.

After all, if the neighborhood's good enough for Centenary College, doesn't that seal the deal?

Thank you Joseph M. Catanese at yahcatphotos' for the use of your eye catching photo of the pink house in Highland.

Shreveport Bridge 2
Originally uploaded by southerntippi.

A week from today SB Land's annual River Blast hits the Festival Plaza with food, fun and fireworks.

The fireworks go off at 9:20 but at 8:30 B-52's from Barksdale Air Force Base will flyover. RRBJ's best tip is don't hassle with parking take the free shuttle from Mall St. Vincent. It's fast, fast, fast and hassle free.

Thank you to Stephanie M. Hart at southerntippi for the use of her photo Shreveport Bridge 2.

If you have a photo, drawing, poem or other piece of art that depicts SB Land send us an email at redriverblogjam@gmail.com so we can put it in the running for the Picture of the Day.

Picture of the Day

This is not what Texas street will look like tomorrow night with the return of Thursday Night Trolley Tours. The fun starts with a cash bar at artspace, 710Texas Street. The Shreveport Times describes the event this way "A guided tour, will showcase what downtown Shreveport has to offer in the way of art, history, culture, movie trivia, and science, on 14 trolley stops..." Your tour guide for the evening will be Jan Pettiet.

Did we mention this event is FREE?! (Excluding the cash bar). Sipping something cool and riding around on a trolley -- can't think of a better way to take in the Southern Museum of Art, West Edge Artists' Co-op, Municipal Auditorium, Logan Mansion, Strand Theatre, Millennium Mural, SciPort Discovery Center, Tipitina's, Spring Street Museum, Hilton Hotel, Shreveport Convention Center, Sports Museum, Arodasi Dance Center, Highway Grrls Gallery, Multicultural Center of the South, and Robinson Film Center.

During the evening at the Barnwell Center sounds of live "Hot Jazz on the Red" will fill the air as part of their Friends of Barnwell Summer Concert Series. The Meadows Museum of Art is also slated to participate, but this confuses RRBJ because that place is in Highland and not in downtown... but, oh well...

Thank you to Ryan Austin Dean at jawbone54 for the night capture of Texas Street.
